Oxford Emergency Surgery Conference

On 11th September 2015, the Oxford Surgical Emergency Conference was held in Jesus College, organised by the Surgical Emergency Unit at OUH NHS Trust. This conference featured a number of talks regarding ongoing work in emergency surgery across the UK. Staff involved in the surgical workstreams with the Patient Safety Academy presented some of their improvement projects which included:


  • Introduction of a transfer nurse to improve ward-theatre communications

  • Standardisation of ward round documentation through introdcution of a proforma

  • Introduction of an ambulatory care area

  • Introduction of new system using mobile phones to improve ward-theatre communications

  • Trialling of ultrasound services on the ward

  • Introduction of direct GP admissions to the surgical assessment unit


Co-director Helen Higham also spoke about our experiences thus far and some of the challenges of running improvement projects.
