Peter has been Reader (now Professor) in surgery at University of Oxford since 2004. He graduated from Aberdeen University and underwent surgical and academic training in Glasgow, before becoming Senior Lecturer at Liverpool University in 1992. His early research work was on cancer metastasis and gastrectomy technique, however he has since become interested in patient safety, and founded the Quality, Reliability, Safety and Teamwork Unit research group, which is dedicated to studies of quality and safety interventions in surgery.
Peter has advised and participated in the development of the NHS Institute programme "the productive operating theatre" and the Health Foundation sponsored project on Safer Theatre Teams. He is actively involved in assisting the Clinical Human Factors Group (CHFG) in their work to improve surgical safety in the UK. Peter also sits on Health Education England's Learning to Be Safer expert group.
